JANE LePAWAH

Market Developer, CEO and Foreign Direct Investment (FDi) Advisor of E'Or SOLUTIONS, Inc.™ (ChinaMarket & AfricaMarket)

..."Business leaders today face daily challenges and crossroads where critical decision making about how to grow businesses, cut costs, define future investment allocations, and enter or leave foreign markets happen regularly.

Often those decisions require deep expertise that in-house teams cannot build fast enough, or an external, independent perspective (like ours) that can identify overlooked risks and opportunities"...

MY STORY

It was 9 years ago, just before this whole 'entrepreneurship' hyped craze (we live in today) and during Jack Ma's $22bn Alibaba IPO (the largest IPO in history till date) in the United States; that the world and China hadn't recovered from and (especially with China's newest title as the second largest economy out of the blues)

That I also was, in late 2014, a 4-month old freshman in business school (Zhejiang University of Technology, Hangzhou) majoring in International Trade ...

There I was seated at the very back (next to the exit door) in Mrs. Lu's IT lecture, bored to death (dying for some little bit of stimulus & excitement). Or really, just waiting to slide out from the exit door before the bell sounded off ...

When suddenly she announced she had hacked a couple different softwares (Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc) online and wanted us to try doing creative projects with them against our Christmas class presentations.

Ugh finally! Something thrilling (outside of studying Chinese Language, which by the way, I' m smitten by) had come along for me since I arrived business school.

My boredom was first and partly because I was tired of endless slides defining business concepts (for the past 4 months from all our lecturers) that I could just google or research them on my own).

It is freshman year, Dah! (What in the world is wrong with me? Haha!

And second, this was my 3rd round in college. I had dropped out twice before. Simply because I always wanted to be involved in my own learning, instead of listening, to then regurgitate my lecturers.

So some how my Dad had managed to talk me into getting back into college, this time some place faraway that I couldn't runaway from completing.

He convinced me saying, "Pikin (Child in broken English), China is the future and you should go there to stay relevant in the future" ...

Oh well, turns out 9 years ago, Dad had great foresight and was right (now 2022, as I write this, China's rise is upon the entire world), just this once (evil wink).

But, yes after Mrs. Lu's announcement, I ran up frantically to her, handed over my flash stick and she input Dreamweaver; for that right there was the challenge I had been waiting for. Something as hard as coding, with a 5 day time crunch to deliver? Everything, to snap me off my boredom.

So, a big shout out to Mrs. Lu! I feel very indebted to her (she doesn't know this but) she changed my life forever, and set me on an entrepreneurial journey in which I had to risk everything (including my stay in China) just for my creative class project (see videos on the top left, and mid right accros) to become a business.

I mean, I was ready to literally die for this classroom project! (oh la la, how romantic ?).

Although looking back at the presentation and feeling very embarrassed at my coding skills that look very much like my future's son's, the IDEA, noteless was incredible.

The IDEA (I had conceived and prototyped, which I talked about in details in my book, "3 Years in 3 Months") was called "nostalgiaz" ~ it was a country-specific marketplace offering homeland goodies for foreigners in all of Southeast Asia.

Therefore, for the next couple months after pitching this IDEA in class (earning Mrs. Lu first prize), other school campuses' (positive feedback and change of name from 'nostalgiaz' to 'emoH') and my business teachers said to either onboard Chinese investors (for equity) or give it up (focus on why I came to business school in the first place - study) as it was too gigantic.

I decided it was preferable to be personally involved in bootstrapping my IDEA and to hire my first staff (two Zambian gigs on the right). Yay!

But who later on abandoned ship because they were not on payroll (bad boss needing sweat equity) and had as their end goal to graduate college with a 'papered' certificate.

Unlike me whose end goal was to graduate with an actual working business (Come on now! I was in business school, only made sense to roll out with a business. Is this too much to ask as my tuitions' ROI?) and lucky enough my IDEA was my way to it.

An even perfect excuse to quit (business) school yet again! (Tongue out!), hire professional marketplace designer (Eak, an elite Hong Kong-based webmaster) and launch my own tech company legally.

HOMAGE and EULOGY to my late Dad, Dr. Chuala Joseph N.

emoH Marketplace 2016 featuring different foreign countries

I know you already passed and wasn't a witness to this. But sorry Dad, I couldn't resist not quitting this time around.

You know? I just wanted to DO international trade and not STUDY it. Big difference right there Daddy!

And besides Dad, can you imagine our Chinese lecturers were not teaching us all the secrets and formulas the Chinese had used to become the second largest economy in the world, out of the blues?

No way, right? So ...

I quit! Got on the streets (the real business school, if you ask me!) and learned those secrets and formulas hands-on, face-to-face, whilst interacting (guan-xing, which is the key to actually succeeding on the China Market), learning and DOING International trade with the Chinese.

And although it took me 3 years to get the business license for my tech company, and sadly I was out of luck with the local Shanghai Government granting me the IT permit (see on the left designed by Eak) after spending lots of money designing the marketplace ... hard lesson I learnt.

It was indeed one hell of ride! And a really, really hard ride of days with no food, burst shoes to meetings, breakouts on my face from the stress of purchasing a second company (see video on the left), got terminally ill with breast cancer too. The stressors, the sacrifices, the heartaches, the costs, years in, the exhaustion, the fears & tears, the unrelenting effort and commitment ... but all worth it.

Now 9 years and I have never looked back to what is today E'Or SOLUTIONS, Inc.™; my second ChinaMarket company, majoring in international trade and movement of capital resources globally.

Dad, I wish you had seen this, I wish you had seen what your baby girl had become and her interactions with the world. I humbly think, I fulfilled your China-wish for me and you'd be so proud!

Rest well Daddy! I love you! And thank you for everything you did when my eyes were too young to see and unreasonable to appreciate you.
